Barn Rescued in North Georgia

TWOvital Partners with Peachtree Tents
A couple of months ago we found a barn in Rydal, Georgia that was destroyed by the tornadoes in April of 2011. With the help of Peachtree Tents staff and big truck we were able to collect 5 tons of barn wood that was going to be burned or hauled off to a landfill. Jeff Terry from Peachtree Tents decided it was time to have a reclaimed furniture line for their clients to rent. TWOvital has been creating barnwood bars, tables risers and more for this new line of sustainable furniture.

RUBBLOX Sustainable Furniture

RUBBLOX is a furniture line created by Dwayne Bass, founder of TWOvital.  RUBBLOX is made of recycled rubber in the great state of Georgia.  Rubber that is no longer suitable for use, have all the fibers, steel belts, and impurities removed to use the finest and cleanest shredded rubber.  The rubber is then dyed using organically mined dyes, which are non-toxic for children, pets and our environment.  RUBBLOX is then shaped and molded into cubes, cylinders and many other shapes to meet all design needs.  Click here to see more RUBBLOX

Art from Tornado Debris

April 27th brought tornadoes that swept across Alabama leaving a devastating trail of broken spirits, broken homes, and tons of debris.  Dwayne Bass, with the help of the the youth and children of FBCW, came up with a creative way to use this debris to raise money for relief efforts.  Bass is a sculptor and photographer from Atlanta with an art degree from UGA.  This idea wasn’t too farfetched for him since his sculptures are made from recycled materials.

It all began when Dwayne came to make arts and crafts from debris at FBCW’s vacation Bible school.  The artwork was a huge hit, and after VBS it grew into a great fundraiser.  We began having designated “painting” days at the church where children and youth effected by the tornado could come make their own pieces of debris art.  We took this artwork and had an art show at the Re- Inspiration Store in Atlanta.  We then began selling it at the church, the Re-Inspiration Store, and now in the Virginia Highlands.  Each of these pieces of art might sell anywhere from $5 to $100 depending on its size.

Dwayne came up with an idea to make a large American Flag out of the debris to be sold at a silent auction.  The flag was purchased by Richard Thomas, the owner of RThomas restaurant on Peachtree Road in Atlanta.  He doubled the first offer to $700 to make sure he would be the owner.  Once he purchased the flag and mounted it on the side of his restaurant he decided he would put up a plaque telling the story of April 27th and where the flag came from.  It was then thought that a pathway should be added leading up to the flag and plaque.  Dwayne suggested a pathway be made from bricks left behind by the tornado from the Webster’s Chapel Fire Department; Mr. Thomas donated an additional $1000.

The project continues, and up to this date has raised around $14,000.  It has been a creative way to bring something positive out of something negative. It is also a wonderful way to recycle much of the debris left behind.  It not only helps to clean up the affected area, but also lifts the spirits of the people in the community.

Vacation Bible School, Jacksonville, AL

On April 27, 2011 tornadoes tore through the Jacksonville, Alabama community.  Homes, businesses, and places of worship were damaged.  Even though these storms were devastating, God can bring good out of anything.  With God’s help, we can be creative with anything that comes our way.

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.  So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.” Psalm 46:1-2

Vacation Bible School(VBS) at First Baptist Church of Williams in Jacksonville, Alabama was held June 6-9, 2011.  TWOvital’s Dwayne Bass helped with the arts and crafts portion by collecting tree debris and some wood from a destroyed barn.  The children painted an image of the globe on a disc of wood and then attached that to a base using the barn wood.  Then they glued the bible verse of the week and some images of the activities they participated in during VBS.  A description was also glued to the back of the piece so the children would always remember from where the materials came and how important it is to be creative from everything that God has given us. Currently Bass is creating a sculpture with the extra wood pieces that the children painted to be on display at the church to help remind others that we all have to keep the faith positive.

Dogs New Years Resolution, Become More Agile

TWOvital was given the opportunity to display their innovative artistic abilities, all while making a great contribution to the historic community of Macon Georgia. Local residents, as well as those just stopping through, can now enjoy the artfully crafted renovations of the Tyler Place Dog Park. Staying true to TWOvital’s mission, all additions to the park have been constructed using recycled and salvaged materials from both the Macon and Atlanta areas. In doing so, the cost of the project came to be with an astounding 75% savings on building materials; all without cutting any corners on the final design intent. The focus of the project was a state of the art agility course which you are encouraged to visit with your pup to test their skills…over the hurdles and through the hoops!

Grant Funding for the agility course was provided by the Knight Neighborhood Challenge, a project of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Central Georgia.

TWOvital Teams up with John Tindel

Compressed layers of symbolism, wit, and figures that pose on contemporary color pallets are unmistakably the imagery of John Tindel. Striving to understand his personal history and place in today’s society, the works progress rapidly evolving from familiar aesthetics to experimental processes with no boundaries.  What emerges is a visual dialog where thoughts, language and observation merge with composition, line and color.  John Tindel is a multi-disciplined artist, designer. He is married to a wonderful woman and is the father of two awesome boys. TINDEL was born in Opelika, Alabama, raised in Panama City Beach, Florida and schooled at the University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. Tindel currently works in Atlanta, Georgia and is one half of TINDELMICHI: Two Fat Southern Boys That Paint. Beyond Regional Charm.

TWOvital goes to the dogs!!!

Check out the video of TWOvital’s Dwayne Bass in partnership with Historic Macon Foundation’s Josh Rogers talking about our latest project in Macon, Georgia.  Bass, a Macon native and his Team will be creating a canine obstacle course and play areas with sculptures for dogs of all sizes to enjoy made from recycled and repurposed building materials for the Tyler’s Place Dog Park as part of the Knight Foundations’ 2010 Neighborhood Challenge.  A key objective for this project is to utilize waste materials found within a quarter mile radius of the dog park.  Discussions with the developers of the new Mercer University Bookstore/mixed use construction site have been very positive and we are very excited and proud to be a part of such a visionary revitalization program.

Maryland High School Seniors Support Sustainable Sculpture

The Class of 2009 at South Carroll High School in Sykesville, Maryland used real ingenuity in gifting a lasting memento to their alma mater.  They commissioned TWOvital’s Bass to create a symbol for the Cavaliers’ new Fine Arts Building which is due to be completed in early August, 2010.  Bass arrived the first of June on the construction site in Sykesville, Maryland and began dumpster diving to retrieve materials to be used in the recycled sculpture.  Upon discovering Bass in dumpsters construction workers were overheard laughing and teasing.  As the scavenged sheet metal, rebar, and copper wire gave birth to the 12 foot sword; the crew was soon so engaged with the artist’s project they were regularly offering contributions left over from that day’s work.  Once school starts back in the Fall, Bass will speak to students about environmentally friendly art and it benefits.  Stay tuned to find out when the Fall Art Show will be held at the New Fine Arts Building.

“It was a pleasure having Dwayne create a piece of “green” art for South Carroll High School’s new fine arts addition. The sword he created from the construction scrap was perfect for our lobby. Dwayne provided us with a unique piece of art work that will look perfect in the fine art addition for years to come. Thank you Dwayne!
